Instructions

Materials Needed

Small Bowl
Sterile Potting Mix
Plastic ZipLock Type Bag
1 Square of Paper Towel
Seed Tray (or Improvised Pot)

Step 1 – Stratification

Start by ripping your Tree Card into several pieces and soaking in a bowl of water overnight. Next, remove the pieces from the water and sandwich in a single piece of moistened paper towel (wet the paper towel under your faucet and then squeeze until no water comes out). Place into a plastic ZipLock type bag and then into your refrigerator for 8-12 weeks. This process is called stratification and is what stimulates baby tree seedlings to grow, by mimicking the winter.

Step 2 – Germination

Now you’re ready to get growing! Take your bag out of the fridge and gently unwrap the moistened paper towel containing your Tree Card pieces. Check to see if anything has already sprouted, and if so, handle carefully with tweezers when you sow.

To sow, place around 2 1/2 inches of sterile potting mix in a seed tray, or improvised pot with adequate drain holes (make sure to clean your tray or pot well before using). Spread out your Tree Card pieces over the surface and lightly cover with a thin layer of additional potting mix. Wet thoroughly by gently watering, or using a spray mister. Place your tray or pot in a shady place.

*Soil temperature must be at least 50-60 F, but your trees will do best in soil that is around 70 F.*

Step 3 – Caring for your Trees

Water around 1 to 2 times a week at this stage. Just make sure that the soil stays moist at all times. Don’t let it dry out! Baby trees will start to pop up around 2 months after planting, depending on conditions.

Be patient and have fun!
